The Benefits of Getting a Family Dog

Even though they are a huge responsibility, pets provide several benefits and bring together families like nothing else. They introduce a common interest for the whole family, and there is such a variety to choose from. Dogs, cats, fish, even birds, can add excitement and encourage children to be more active, loving, and responsible.

Bringing Family Together

Usually the entire family can gather around Rowdy, play, and have fun for hours. Dogs particularly make great entertaining pets because they love to play and be the center of attention. Dogs also are emotional – it is easy to include them into your family. This goes for other animals too like parrots and even cats. You and your family will love and care for your K-9 like he is another member of the family.Love your pets!

Teaches Responsibility

While pets can be fun, it takes a lot of work to take care of them, especially dogs.  Use this large task as a opportunity to teach your kids responsibility – they will learn that everything requires work and will become more responsible because they will have to care for something that they love.

Initial set-up for any pet requires training, along with supplies – a dog needs food, a pet feeder, and a bed, just for basics. There are several pet furniture options you can choose from, depending on your dog’s needs.

Once your dog is settled, daily chores your kids can help out with include feeding, walking, bathing, or training. Sit with your kids on the internet to find training-tips for your dog’s breed that they can implement. For training, crates and even electric fences are extremely convenient for hyper or disobedient dogs.

Not only will giving the kids some of the responsibility give them a sense of independence and confidence, but it will make them more proactive to help out in other areas around the house.

Keeps Everyone Active

The best part about dogs is that they keep everyone active. Dogs have to be taken out, so you and your family will be forced to step outside for a walk. This promotes physical activity, gets the kids away from their TV, video games, and computers, and once again brings the family together since everyone can do the activity together.

Pet Stores vs. Pet Shelters

While pet stores are good if you are looking for a particular breed, local pet shelters and organizations like the Humane Society also have many options. Not only will you pay less at a shelter, but you will also help those animals in need. While dogs are great family pets, don’t forget about all the other animals out there. Go with your whole family to find your new family addition!
