How to Throw the Best Kid Party (on a Budget)

Summer’s here, and when you’re a kid, that means free time. What better way to help your kids enjoy their free time and keep in touch with school friends than to have the occasional party? No, it doesn’t have to be big, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive, but it ought to make use of the great summer weather and the kids’ youthful vitality.

There are two essential ingredients to any successful kids’ party. Here, we’ve compiled a list of these components, and presented them, along with a few tips on how to get them on a budget.

  • Food: What would a party be without food? The good news here is that kids are usually pretty easy to please. As long as there’s a “main course”, some kind of snack, a drink, and some kind of dessert, you’re set.

Budget-Friendly Tip - If you’re throwing the party in your backyard, why not fire up the grill and have hot dogs? At less than 50 cents per piece, hot dogs, buns and condiments are an economical option that kids love. Potato or tortilla chips are a fantastic snack/side to go with hot dogs. They can be served plain or with some kind of dip, and are usually available in “family size” bags. As far as dessert goes, get something frozen. It’s hot, and kids will love the opportunity to cool off and enjoy a tasty treat at the same time. What about popsicles? This kid-approved treat has been a cheap way to get your sugar fix for years.

  • Activities: Before and after it is time to eat, the party guests are going to need something to keep them occupied (and maybe a little tired out too?). This is where the main activity of the party comes in. If there is one, it may be tied to the theme of the party, or it may be based entirely on location. Thinking a jungle safari? Or, purpose a party for the little kings and princesses with a castle jumper?

It being a summer party, you’ll likely want to incorporate some activity that lets the kids cool off. If you live near the ocean or a large body of water, holding your party at the beach is a great way to do this. Not only will the kids love it, but it’s completely free. Want to throw in some extra excitement? Get your own water trampoline…it is a sure-fire hit that no kid will forget!

If you’re lucky enough to have a pool, you might consider holding the party in your backyard. This is a better option for smaller groups as it allows the adult(s) in charge to keep an eye on the kids, while not having to worry about being in a public place. The addition of a blow up waterslide adds extra fun in the sun! Like the beach, a pool is also a cost-effective option.

In the absence of a body of water or a pool, there’s always the classic backyard option: the sprinkler. Other garden hose attachments like a “slip n slide” or inflatable water slide will create the effect of an amusement park in the comfort of your own backyard.

Summer is here. Get your kids out of the house and help brighten the day of some neighbor kids with an awesome party (and without breaking the bank)!
