Winter Family Fun Ideas
By Michael K.
Winter is a special time of year. In addition to a change of the seasons, for most of us, winter marks a time of family get-togethers and fun. In November, there’s Thanksgiving, and in December, Christmas, Chanukah, and Kwanzaa, just to name a few.
While for many, the focus of this time of year is on each other, it sometimes helps to facilitate this fellowship with a bit of family fun. At GoodDeals.com there’s nothing we like better than spending time with loved ones. So, check out the
list of winter family fun ideas
we’ve compiled, and see if one doesn’t sound like something you’d like to do with your family this winter!
Roast Chestnuts:
The
Bing Crosby
song describes a veritable winter wonderland, and in it, chestnuts are “roasting on an open fire.” If you’ve not yet tried this classic winter treat, get to the supermarket and pick up a couple pounds. They’re cheap, delicious, and the whole family will love making them.
Downhill Sledding:
Of course, this depends on whether it snows where you live or not, but if you wake up to a field of white, think about
grabbing a sled
and heading to the nearest hill. The kids will be entertained for hours, which give adults time to catch up.
Build a Fire:
There’s no better opportunity to switch off the central heat and cozy around your fireplace than a cold winter’s day. Kids can learn the basics of building a proper fire while couples cozy up on a couch in their winter sweaters.
Drink Hot Cocoa:
This goes will everything. But the simple act of making hot cocoa, whether it be from a hot chocolate mix or made from scratch, can bring the whole family together. Just watch as little ones ask to stir the pot while grandma and grandpa tell stories about how they used to make this delicious drink.
Visit a Tree Farm:
Decorating a tree together can be a great bonding experience. If you happened to have a
tree farm in your area
, consider driving directly to the farmer to cut down your own evergreen. Doing so can be educational for the kids, and a lot of fun for everyone. You’ll also save money over store prices!
Go Skiing:
While this activity may not be for everyone, there’s no better winter exercise than cross-country skiing. In addition, it gives the family hours to chat, and the views can be breathtaking. If adventure is more your speed, hit the slopes at the nearest mountain. Just watch out for those moguls!
Build a Snow Man:
This is a no-brainer. On top of the kids expressing their creative sides by decorating the snow man as they will, it gives the family an excuse to spend time together enjoying the crisp air.
Make “Toffee":
Caramel can be made either from a store-bought mix, or
from scratch
. Either way, the kids will love taking a mug full out to the snow and writing their names, along with their favorite designs in the snow, just to watch it harden into a delicious winter snack.
Regardless of where you live, or which activities you choose this winter season, enjoy each other’s company. You’re family!
