College How-To: Keep Bugs Out of Your Dorm Room

By Heather Andrews

College is supposed to be the best time of your life where your main concerns are learning new things and making new friends. Part of the fun of the college experience is getting out on your own and living in the dorms. However, living in close quarters in the college dorms with little food storage space also makes students vulnerable to bug infestation. Your dorm room is your college sanctuary and home, so you want it to be clean, inviting, and bug free. Prevention is the key when it comes to dorm room pest control.

Here are some easy ways to keep bugs out of your dorm room:

1) Keep Your Room Clean
Living on your own means that you don’t have your parents there to clean up after you anymore. That also means that no one is nagging you to clean up right away, so the temptation to put off cleaning until later is much stronger now that you’re living in the dorms. However, it’s a lot easier to do a few dishes or seal that open bag of chips now than it will be to get rid of bugs later.

2) Check What You Bring In
College students are notoriously on a budget and move frequently. Many students turn to purchasing used items to spruce up their dorm rooms. While this is a budget-friendly practice, it may not be the best way to protect your dorm from insects. Make sure to thoroughly inspect any used furniture before purchase to make sure you're not bringing bed bugs or other pests into your dorm along with that used futon. Also, make sure the boxes you use for packing and unpacking during moving times are free of insects. Bug removal is a difficult and unpleasant process. Avoid it by carefully selecting what you bring into your dorm room. In the event you see something crawling, be sure to get rid of the bug right away.

3) Put Technology to Use
Even though you may be using the right methods of pest control, other students (or even your own roommates) may not be as careful. Bugs can migrate from a neighboring room very easily. An ultrasonic pest repeller is a great secret weapon you can use to protect yourself against a bug infestation. All you have to do is plug it in and it will emit a powerful ultrasonic frequency that will keep the bugs away but won't disturb you or your roommates. An ultrasonic pest repeller is also non-toxic, making it a safe precautionary way to get rid of bugs.

College is all about having new experiences. However, one new experience you want to avoid is an infestation of pesky insects in your dorm room. Precaution is the most effective method you can use to get rid of bugs. If you follow these preventive tips, you'll be on the road to keeping your dorm room insect free.
