How to Entertain the Kids over the Holidays

By Heather Andrews

Most of us enjoy the holidays with family and friends. While the adults enjoy good food, drinks and conversation, the kids are usually playing. However, we all know it takes a lot of preparation work to host a holiday event. The kids can get bored while the cleaning and cooking are happening. Here are some unique tips for keeping the kids entertained while they are out of school and waiting for the party to begin:

  1. Let the kids help - Children like to be a part of the process. Bake cookies or cupcakes and let the kids decorate them to be put out at the party or they can decorate them after the meal and present them to the whole group when they are ready.

  1. Create a kid friendly space - We all want our homes to look perfect when we have company. This means that toys are usually picked up and put away. Try creating a space or designating a room to be the kid zone. Put out more toys in this area than normal and be sure to include a lot of toys that encourage group play. This will keep the children more entertained in this area rather than running all over the house distributing toys that have already been put away.

  1. Create games - Kids are generally not entertained by adult conversation and can start to seek attention while you are focused on spending time with your adult relatives and friends. Create games that keep the children occupied, but also allow them to receive the attention they need. For example, create a scavenger hunt for the kids to play after your holiday meal. Include the adults by having them hold the clues for where each item is. Another idea is to have a dress up photo booth with lots of outfits and accessories the kids and even the adults can dress up in. Have one adult (or take turns) in charge of taking the photos.

  1. Family activities - Time with our extended families are usually the moments that we will remember, especially when we are children. Create memories with the whole family by including family activities in your day. Playing charades, Pictionary or having a talent contest are a great way to get everyone having fun together.

  1. Go outside - Children often stay inside all day on holidays which can make for a very long day with lots of energy built up. Take the kids outside to play. Make this time extra special with exciting outdoor fun including an inflatable bounce house. If you live in an area cold enough for snow, have sledding time with an inflatable snow sled.

Children have a lot of energy and get very excited to see their family and friends. During your holiday planning and preparation, make sure you are creating activities and memorable moments for the kids. Ensure the kids are receiving plenty of attention while still having lots of quality adult time.
