Camping can be a great family activity. It allows you to get outdoors, away from it all, and to connect on new levels. However, camping throws in a new set of challenges that if not properly prepared for can wreck the entire weekend. One of the most important things to consider is where you should go. Here is a look at some of the more interesting places that you can take a trip to, all within a short drive of a major metropolitan area.

  1. Near Atlanta, Georgia One of best places to camp near Atlanta is Stone Mountain. With its 400-foot carvings of Confederate Civil War heroes and beautiful pine-wooded grounds, this campground is perfect for a weekend getaway.View from Trail Ridge Road, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

  2. Near Boston, Massachusetts - While Boston itself has many wonderful things to do, sometimes people just need to get out of town. If you are tired of the hustle and bustle, then consider Harold Parker State Forest. Just a few miles away from town, this campground is an entire world away and features a pond and beautiful forest to help you reconnect with nature.

  3. Near Chicago, Illinois - One of the best camping locations near Chicago is actually in Indiana, and it is less than an hour away. Indiana Dunes lies near a huge moraine dune that allows you to see for miles. Plus, being on the shores of Lake Michigan you have access to all the water activities that you love as well.

  4. Near Denver, Colorado - Denver has so much to do for those who enjoy the outdoors. One of the better campgrounds is Rocky Mountain National Park. Once there you can enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains and streams found within.

  5. Near Las Vegas, Nevada - While Las Vegas has plenty to do with the casinos and nightlife, sometimes people want to get away from it all. Nearby is Mt. Charleston, the second highest peak in Nevada that has beautiful red-rock scenery. The Spring Mountains offer a total of five campgrounds where you can take advantage of the natural beauty and cooler weather.

  6. Near Los Angeles, California - Los Angeles seems to have it all, and surprisingly enough this also includes campgrounds. One of the local favorites is Joshua Tree National Park. Joshua Tree National Park is the opposite of what many people think of when they picture the desert. While it is hot, the wildflowers and wildlife are abundant during the spring make it a great place to visit while the cool fall breezes can be a welcome break from the hot weather.

  7. Near Minneapolis, Minnesota - Besides being a thriving metropolitan area, Minneapolis is also in the heart of a state known for its outdoor recreation. Lake Elmo Park Reserve offers 105 campsites, including those that are drive in, walk in, and equestrian accessible and is located on Lake Elmo. It offers beautiful scenery and open spaces for those looking for outdoor adventure.

  8. Near New York, New York - While the Big Apple is known for its metropolitan scenery, it also offers nearby camping next door in New Jersey. High Point Monument is less than an hour out of the city and offers tent-only camping with scenic views of the Catskills and the Poconos.

This year, put some extra time aside for your family and bonding. Camping is a great way to spend time with your kids, allowing for physical activity and learning new skills.
