The Egyptian - themed chessman in this set mirror classic Egyptian imagery. The Pharaoh takes the place of the king, complete with a sarcophagus, a flail, and a hooked stick. The queen is a female version with ceremonial headgear. The Sphinx makes an appearance, as does one of the great pyramids. Check out the enlarged pictures above for more detail. Did You know: Chess in Ancient Egypt? Thought to be one of the predecessors to modern-day chess, Senet was a board game enjoyed in ancient Egypt. Senet, played as early as 3000 B.C., is a race to the finish line. Each player had 5 to 7 pawns on a board that ranged from 3 x 10 squares, to a more advanced version with 8 linear squares and an additional 4 x 3. 'Knuckle Bones', or little sticks - much like dice - were used to advance in the game. Senet is thought to have represented divine Egyptian gods and the afterlife. Chess Tibbit: According to "Chatrang Namakwor", which translates to "A Manual of Chess", Shatrang (Chess) represents the universe of ancient Indian mysticism. The four sides represent the four elements (fire, air, earth and water), and the four ‘humors’ of man.
